‘Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker’ review

Well, there we go.

Apparently we’re at the end of ‘The Skywalker Saga’ and you can bet your bottom dollar that WHINE+SPACE are gonna be here to give you our thoughts. At length. Some would say too much length.

Before you begin, please bear in mind that this is a SPOILER FILLED review from the very outset, so don’t listen until you’ve seen that there Skywalker rise like lovely Jakku bread

Star Wars - The Last Jedi’ commentary

Old dependable Star Wars, eh?

It comes around like clockwork, and each time the assembled fandom collectively welcomes the latest offering into their hearts to treasure for all time.

Except, no. Much like calling a poorly-judged referendum, ‘The Last Jedi’ had the effect of exposing some pretty profound differences of opinion in the fan base and stoked flame wars the likes of which we haven’t seen since the prequels. So, two years after the film’s release and two weeks before ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ hits the cinemaplex, WHINE+SPACE sit down to look back at Episode VIII, looking at its strengths, its flaws - and trying to decide what it is about the film that produced such diverse and passionate views.

Buckle up - we’ve got a bad feeling about this!

’Solo: A Star Wars story’ commentary

Hank Silo!

He’s everyone’s favourite scoundrel, rogue, scruffy lookin’, nerf herder! So, as a result, a SOLO film about him, an anthology film, an origin film focused on him, is bound to be a complete success, a sure thing, box-office dynamite, a guaranteed slam-dunk, amirite?

No. No, I am not right. ‘Han Solo: A Star Wars film’ has the dubious distinction of being the first financial failure of the Star Wars theatrical canon - but does it deserve that honour? Is the quality of the film actually in line with its box-office reception? Those are exactly the kind of tough questions we’re going to be asking as we prepare for the imminent release of ‘Thighs of Skywalker’, so strap in tight - it’s going to be a bumpy ride

The Halloween Rewatch Project- 'Halloween' (2018)

It’s November!

And what says November better than yet another commentary for a ‘Halloween’ film? We’ve reached the end of our journey back through the franchise and are finally at 2018’s hard course-correction.

Michael’s retired. Laurie’s doing great. Loomis has set up a health food store. What crazy bunch of circumstances will bring these three together again?

Let’s find out!

The Halloween rewatch project- 'Halloween 2' (2009) commentary

It’s October! That’s the month that hallowe’en happens in! It’s also the month that many of the films in the ‘Halloween’ franchise take place, including ‘Halloween’, ‘Halloween 2’, ‘Halloween’ (‘2007’), ‘Halloween’ (2018) and even ‘Halloween II’ (2009) - the very film this podcast is about!

It’s, of course, a well-regarded film. A beloved film. A film both as commercially successful and critical applauded as ‘Avengers: Endgame’. But the only opinions that matter are ours, so join WHINE+SPACE as we look back at one of the Halloween films, I forget which, exactly

The Halloween Rewatch Project - ‘Halloween’ (2007)

Halloween is right around the corner, so at WHINE+SPACE it’s time to look back at a true seminal work of horror cinema, we talk, naturally of ‘Halloween’....2007 Rodney Zombie Edition.

Join us as we dive deep into the murky, grimy, tops-off-Tuesday-infused world of Rod Zombie, as he creates quite the work of auteurism that answers the eternal question: what if everyone behaved shittily, would you in turn behave like a proper shit?

There’s only one way to find out!

'IT: Chapter Two' review

Is ‘It: Chapter Two’ actually Shit: Chapter Poo?

That’s exactly what we’re here to find out, and find out we do - in this bumper length review of the hottest clown biopic this side of ‘Joker’. Here at Whine+Space, we’re both huge fans of Stephen King’s novel, so how do we feel the Loser’s Club do with a second crack of the whip?

Will we go Full Turtle? Will we have sudden sexual revelations? Will we make the cut? There’s only one way to find out!

The Matrix Rebooted

Everyone knows that WHINE+SPACE have their fingers on the pulse, delivering timely discussion on breaking topics that are lighting up the social medias like no-one’s business - which is exactly why we waited several weeks to discuss the news of Warner Bros. announcing production of a fourth film in the ‘Matrix’ series, a mini-lifetime after the largely poorly received sequels.

Will ‘The Matrix 4’ make the franchise 100% LIT once again? Will audiences overcome their inherent scepticism of continuing this long dormant property? Will Neo get a dog?

’Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood’ review

Those swinging sixties, eh?

With the free love and the drugs and the music and the Vietnam and the hippies and the cults and the murder - what a time to be alive! Clearly Quentin Tarantino thinks so, but the real question is - do we? Join us as we sit down to discuss the 9th film from that fella and bring a close to our months-long Rewatch Project of his back catalogue.

And away we go!

The Tarantino Rewatch Project - ‘The Hateful Eight’

Baby, it’s cold outside! Also, you’re going to need to nail the door shut. No, with two pieces of wood.

Yep, WHINE+SPACE are gearing up for the UK release of ’Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ and our Tarantino Rewatch Project is drawing to a close with a look back at the claustrophobia-filled, racism-suffused, blood-drenched walls of Minnie’s Haberdashery - and the lovable band of killers, thieves and killers that we like to call ‘The Hateful Eight’

The Halloween Rewatch Project - ‘Halloween: Resurrection’

Hooooo boy!

It looks like we’re coming towards the end of yet another timeline and in a manner which is arguably more full of errors in judgment than ‘The Curse of Michael Myers’ could ever hope to be.

Yet despite a grand smorgasbord of poor decisions, a horrible mistreatment of Laurie’s character and the crushing weight of the early 2000s captured in pure, undiluted form, we can’t help but have some strange sense of misguided affection for ‘Resurrection’ - possibly because we have the news of ‘Halloween Kills’ and ‘Halloween Ends’ to soothe our wounds!

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ review

Take your grief, pack it into a tiny ball deep inside and let loose - it’s time for a summer holiday! We join Peter and the gang on a delightful vacation, taking in such sights as the Fire Monster! Water Guy! Fishbowl Man!

Join WHINE+SPACE for a post-Endgame after match special, as we try and grapple with the Night Monkey within us all.

The Halloween Rewatch Project - ‘Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later’ commentary

Heck, we’ve gone and created a new timeline! I guess Paul Stephen Rudd has been messing around with the Quantum Realm again, because it seems we’ve shat Halloween 4, 5 and 6 down the pan and are returning with our in-depth look back at ‘H20’. We join Laurie Strode two decades after she had a somewhat rough Samhain, where she’s the headmistress of a big ole’ fancypants private school, has a terribly-haired Josh Harnett for a son and is nursing a commendable drinking problem. But, would you believe it, her errant brother comes a-calling and Laurie has to get her Bogeyman-killing mojo back in action.

What do we make of this sequel to 1 and 2? Do we agree with Paul Stephen Rudd shitting 4, 5 and 6 down the pan? Most importantly, how do we feel about H20 in light of Halloween 2018’s eventual *double* sacking-off of the continuity? There’s only one way to find out!

The Halloween Rewatch Project - ‘Halloween - The Curse of Michael Myers’ (Theatrical cut) commentary

Curses!

We’ve all had them placed upon us at one time or another, but it seems like old Michael Myers is having a particularly bad case of it, bless him, because the symptoms seem to be featuring in a truly batshit film which is neither here nor there. Join us as we dive into the bonkers world of Halloween 6 and try and make sense of the film’s messy production, its multiple versions and whether any story explaining Michael could ever satisfy

The Tarantino Rewatch Project - ‘Django Unchained’

Do you like slavery? Is that you kind of thing? Are you all in on slavery? If so, this probably isn’t the film, or indeed podcast, for you.

Old Quentin is enlisting Christoph Waltz to work his sorcery once again and magic is indeed what flows forth from him. But can the cast of other no-hopers like Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx and Sam Jackson possibly keep up? There’s only one way to find out - and that’s to hit play on this here earbook with all the speed of the fastest gun in the south!

The Tarantino Rewatch Project - ‘Inglourious Basterds’

WHINE+SPACE returns to our old pal Quentin Tarantino, as we ready ourselves to take a long hard look at the 2009 documentary he made about the second world war. How have our perspectives on the film changed - and is it more or less fun to see Nazis get blowed up in 2019?

The Tarantino Rewatch Project - ‘Death Proof’

Is it still murder if you get hurt in the crash too? WHINE+SPACE are here to find out - as we continue our look back over the Tarantino oeuvre with ‘Death Proof’. Separated from its ‘Grindhouse’ sibling, and with an additional 27 minutes added, we try and work out whether the film *is* an adrenaline shot to the heart, or whether watching it means we’ll require one

The Halloween Rewatch Project - ‘Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers’

Proving the age-old adage that you simply can’t keep a playa down, Michael Myers is BACK - having spent a lovely year recuperating at the river-side spa of Old Man Jim. But, would you believe it, all the thanks that Old Man Jim gets is a good murdering, and before you can say Mike’s yer uncle, The Shape is descending upon Haddonfield once more.

WILL Michael learn that violence is never the answer? WILL Loomis specify which of his limbs have been replaced with space-age prosthetics? WILL Jamie learn that you can’t go all stab-y on your Mum without people taking exception to it?

Find out - in this month’s edition of the Halloween Rewatch Project!

The Halloween rewatch project- 'Halloween 4: The return of Michael Myers' commentary

Let’s not beat around the bush - ‘Season of the Witch’ was the most fun that you can have with your clothes on and not on morphine. But there’s a reason we started this damn project, and it ain’t to snort Stonehenge Dust and hallucinates worms crawling out of our kids - it’s to track the trials and tribulations of cinema’s blackest eyes.

So, it’s with a warm heart and a burnt exterior that we welcome back the sultan of stabs to the Halloween Rewatch Project - good luck, Michael!

‘Captain Marvel’ review

We truly are in the endgame now. We’re less than fifty days out from our next epic Avengers adventure, but there’s one little stop we have to make first - across the galaxy, Brie Larson is waiting to punch Thanos’s head off and upset a swathe of alarmingly insecure manbabies.

But what of the film itself? We’re dealing with a stellar cast, a delightfully youthful Nick Fury and a particularly hungry kitty - but does that make the final stop before ‘Endgame’ one that soars or just burns up?

There’s only one way to find out!

'Ant-Man and The Wasp’ commentary

It’s finally March and Captain Marvel is mere days away! So, the WHINE+SPACE boyz are preparing in the sanest way possible - by looking back at the big climatic finale of Phase Three - ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’!

Will Scott enjoy house arrest? Will he become the most powerful magic user in the MCU? Will we manage to stay on topic and not constantly talk about ‘Endgame’?

There’s only one way to find out!

The Tarantino Rewatch Project - ‘Kill Bill’

Here we are at last, ready to embark on the roaring rampage of revenge that is QT’s fourth film or, er, films?

You’re correct, this month we’re taking a cheeky look back at ‘Kill Bill’, one of the most formative films of our youth and, in many ways, our real entry point into Tarantino’s films. But how has it aged? Does it live up to our teenage-era memories? And does the film in 2019 simply carry too much baggage to be freely enjoyed?

Find out the answer to all these questions and more, with this look back at ‘Vol.1’ - with ‘Vol.2’ finding its way into your earpipes this time next week!

The Halloween rewatch project- 'Halloween III: Season of the Witch' commentary

It’s another entry in the Halloween Rewatch Project, so naturally it’s time to catch up with the iconic, impassive, indestructible lug who we love, Michael M - wait, what?

That’s right, the time has cometh for us to pull on our highly distinctive masks and abandon trick or treating in time for the big give away, as it’s the season of the witch - and someone’s about to play a classic prank on us!

'Avengers - Infinity War' commentary

It’s the big one!

We’re just a few short months out from the debut of ‘Endgame’ and it would seem our grand Marvel rewatch is also entering the endgame, as we’ve astonishingly reached the stage of sitting down to natter over the adventures of that gentleman Thanos, a large fellow with some equally big ideas.

Join us, won’t you, as we assemble those Avengers one last time, for what’s sure to be a rousing victory!
